White Privilege Is Real No Matter How Distasteful
If we don’t believe it we‘re just lying to ourselves
Americans as a society like to think that they are open minded. We like to think that we have progressed beyond affirmative action, segregation, racism, sexism, homophobia, and a host of other social issues, but all indications are that we haven’t truly progressed as much as we’d like to think.
The problem hits home
On a recent visit to Walmart I witnessed our lack or progress first hand and it left me scratching my head.
It is customary at this retailer, after paying for your items, to pass by a store employee stationed at the exit. This employees job is to watch for potential theft of goods. They will ask for your receipt and do a quick comparison to the goods in your cart. This is where I experienced “white privilege” first hand.
I worked my way towards the exit of the store following a hispanic man with his cart full of groceries. The employee stationed at the door asked the man for his receipt. The man complied immediately and handed his receipt to the employee. His cart and receipt were scrutinized quite thoroughly. After about 30 seconds or so the receipt was handed back to the customer and he was on his way.
