When most people picture writers they see them typing away on a computer emblazoned with the fruit logo, either an Apple MacBook or a Mac desktop. In many cases they wouldn’t be wrong, but this thinking neglects the fact that most writers are starving artists and Apple products are premium, with premium price tags.

What this leaves us with are those of us that either use Microsoft Windows full-time or at least some of the time. Yes, I know there are those of you who are Linux fanatics, but this article will be focusing on the vast majority of people who are Windows users.

With this being said, lets get down to my top 5 suggestions for free Windows applications designed for the writer.

MarkdownPad 2

MarkdownPad 2 is a full-featured markdown editor for Windows. It is available as a free version or it can be upgraded to Pro for a one-time purchase of $14.95. The free version should be more than adequate for the majority of users.
